Big Daddy stars Adam Sandler, Jon Stewart, Leslie Mann, the Sprouse twins (Cole and
Dylan), and Joey Lauren Adams. In this movie, Sonny Coufax (Sandler) is a thirty-three year old
goofy slacker. He studied law in school, but never took the bar exam or pursued a career - in
fact, he works only one day a week in a toll booth and basically lives off his roommate, Kevin
Gerrity (Stewart), who is a lawyer, as many of his friends are. When Kevin announces he is
going to marry his long time girlfriend Corinne Maloney (Mann), who is a doctor and does not
approve of Sonny's lifestyle, and Sonny's own girlfriend leaves him, Sonny realizes he had
better start getting his life together or he will end up alone for the rest of his life.
Opportunity for Sonny to be responsible presents itself when a five year old kid (Sprouse)
shows up on his doorstep. Sonny finds out that his mother could not take care of him and Kevin
is the boy's biological father. However, Kevin is taking off for China at the time to represent
his law firm in some matter, so Sonny decides to take matters in his own hands. He pretends to
be Kevin in order to care for the kid, whose name is Julian, and tells child services they need
not send Julian to a foster home. Of course, Sonny tells Julian he can do whatever he wants,
and he even lets Julian name himself (he names himself "Frankenstein"), as Sonny believes his
own father had messed him up by always telling him what to do. However, when Julian misbehaves
too much at school, Sonny takes back his "do whatever" style and makes Julian practice good
hygeine and study, which also helps Sonny develop a sense of responsibility. In fact, he even
catches the attention of Corinne's sister, Layla (Adams), who is also a lawyer, and the two
fall in love. However, Layla is reluctant to want to have anything to do with raising a child,
as she does not want to change her life. In the meantime, child services catches on that Sonny
is not really Kevin, and they threaten to take Julian away from Sonny.
