The Cable Guy stars Jim Carrey and Matthew Broderick. Carrey plays a very lonely and
disturbed cable installer, who doesn't even really work for the cable company. The cable
installer doesn't even ever reveal his real name; he adopts names from various television
characters, but he calls himself Chip Douglas throughout the film (Chip is a character from
My Three Sons). "Chip" installs cable in the apartment of Steven Covacs (Broderick),
including illegal channels, and Chip seeks friendship out of Steven. Steven doesn't really want
to hang out with Chip at first, but after Chip shows Steven how cable works and later takes
Steven to a Medieval Times restaurant and lounge (where the two end up jousting), Steven and
Chip slowly bond. However, Chip complicates things by fixing up things between Steven and his
girlfriend behind Steven's back, and Steven decides him and Chip should not hang out anymore.
Feeling betrayed, Chip seeks to ruin Steven's life by sending him to prison on account of
accepting stolen goods (earlier, Chip illegally snuck a deluxe home entertainment system into
Steven's apartment, which Steven decided to keep for the weekend), infiltrating Steven's
family, and even kidnapping Steven's girlfriend!
