Happy Gilmore stars Adam Sandler, Frances Bay, Carl Weathers, Christopher McDonald, and
Julie Bowen. Sandler plays the title character, a wannabe hockey player who never made it onto
a professional hockey team. Happy has lived with his grandmother (Bay) most of his life, since
his mother left him and his father was killed in a hockey-related accident. Apparently, Happy's
grandmother owes the IRS $275,000 worth of back taxes and penalties, and she is in danger of
losing her house. All seems hopeless, until one day, Happy finds he has an amazing long range
golf ball driving ability, most likely as a result of his aspirations to be a hockey player
(his father taught him the "perfect hockey puck slap"). Happy's long-range driving ability
catches the eye of former golf legend and golf instructor Chubbs Peterson (Weathers), who
suggests Happy join the PGA tour. Happy follows Chubbs' suggestion, and when he makes it onto
the PGA tour, he is considered a threat to PGA regular Shooter McGavin (McDonald), who thought
it was his year to win the tour. Also to Happy's dismay, while no other PGA golfer can match
his long range driving ability, his short game (putting) sucks. Happy's overly aggressive
nature does not help matters on the tour either. Fortunately, Happy has PGA tournament PR head
Virginia Venit (Bowen) to keep his temper under control on the green. Chubbs also offers to
improve Happy's short game free of charge. Hilarity ensues.
