Hot Tub Time Machine
Hot Tub Time Machine stars John Cusack, Clark Duke, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson,
Lyndsy Fonseca, and Lizzy Caplan. At the beginning of this movie, in 2010, three friends are not
having happy adult lives. Adam (Cusack) has just gone through a horrible breakup with someone
who took most of his possessions; he also has a twenty-something second-life addicted nephew,
Jacob (Duke), living in his basement. Lou (Corddry) is a party guy way past his prime and has
attempted to kill himself. Nick (Robinson) is stuck in a dead-end job and married to a cheating
and controlling wife. After hearing of Lou's suicide attempt, Nick and Adam decide the three of
them, and Jacob, need to spend a weekend up in Kodiak Valley Ski Resort, where they have had
some of their best memories. While staying in the resort, the four guys all get naked in a hot
tub, Lou spills Chernobly, an illegal Russian energy drink, into the hot tub's controls, and it
causes the four to travel back in time to 1986, which apparently was during a pivotal weekend in
Adam, Lou, and Nick's lives. Adam, Lou, and Nick have also taken over their younger bodies,
while Jacob, not yet born, exists in his 2010 body. Adam, Lou, and Nick initially make sure to
do the exact same thing they did that weekend in 1986: Adam has to break up with his
then-girlfriend Jennifer Stedmeyer (Fonseca), who stabs him in the eye with a fork; Lou has to
get his ass kicked by ski resort employees; Nick has to perform on stage with his band,
Chocolate Lipstick, and get booed, and he has to have sex with a groupie (despite him being
married to Courtney in his heart). However, the three end up deviating from their plan.
Adam does not break up with Jennifer when he is supposed to, and, as a result, he goes to a Poison concert held in the resort and meets Spin magazine journalist April (Caplan). Jennifer actually breaks up with Adam anyway, and Adam still says something that causes her to stab him in the eye with a fork. Adam and April later have fun together, and April also convinces Adam not to be so afraid of the unknown; the two fall in love, but unfortunately, April has to leave on a bus and Adam cannot go with as he feels he must return to the future. As for Nick, he performs the song "Let's Get it Started" from the Black-Eyed Peas (which was not released as a single until 2004), and he rocks the crowd as opposed to being less than mediocre. He also calls up his then nine-year-old wife Courtney and tells her he's not going to let her control him anymore and that she'd better stop cheating. Lou still gets beat up by Blaine, the ski patrol bully. He later gets beat up by Blaine and five others again, without the support of Nick or Adam, and he begins to seriously question how much his friends really mean to him. However, he does try to change the past by almost having a three-way with Jacob and an Asian hooker. He also tries making money by betting on known future outcomes of games (but that doesn't exactly work out) and plans on using his knowledge of the future to make money in other ways, such as "inventing" an internet search engine. While in 1986, Lou also inadvertently discovers he's Jacob's father, and the weekend they traveled to was the weekend Jacob had been conceived (up until then, Jacob had no idea who his father was). Meanwhile, the four guys have figured out they need the Chernobly to get back to 2010, and they also must go before the next day or they'll be stuck in the past forever. Unfortunately, Blaine had taken the Chernobly the first time he beat Lou up, and Blaine has also managed to convince the rest of the ski patrol that the four are Russian spies! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
