Joe Dirt stars David Spade, Dennis Miller, Brittany Daniel, and Kid Rock. In this
movie, a janitor at a radio station by the name of Joe Dirt (Spade), whose last name is
different from that of his father's, is looked upon as a loser in life. However, this changes
when he is invited to talk about his life story on the air with disc jockey Zander Kelly
(Miller). When Joe was eight years old, he became separated from his family at a trip to the
Grand Canyon. After living with several different foster parents and serving some time in
juvenile hall, Joe finds himself in the town of Silvertown, ID, where he gets close with farm
girl Brandy (Daniel) and her dog, Charlie, after helping unfreeze Charlie's genatalia from
Brandy's back porch. At the same time, Joe gets on the bad side of a bully named Robby (Rock),
who considers Joe competition for Brandy's love. Robby hopes to marry Brandy one day, but Joe
keeps trying to assure Robby that he and Brandy are just friends, although Joe is oblivious to
Brandy's true feelings for him.
After Brandy's father loses his leg due to his foot getting caught on railroad tracks, he
blames Charlie and shoots him. After this, Joe feels the need to search for his parents. Along
the way, Joe gets a series of odd jobs, such as advertising for a dentist, working on an oil
rig, working at a carnival, and becoming a janitor at a New Orleans, LA elementary school. His
journey also finds him helping an "Indian tracker," named Kicking Wing, improve his fireworks
business. He also meets an attractive woman named Jill at the carnival where he worked, and he
ends up having sex with her, but afterwards, he is afraid she may have been his long-lost
sister (she wasn't); he nearly gets literally skinned by a psychopath known as "Buffalo Bob."
Joe also accidentally blows the cover of Clem, the head janitor at the school where he worked;
Clem was formerly involved with the mafia and had been relocated to New Orleans through a
witness protection program; Clem tried to make Joe a hero after Clem rescued a science class
from a student who accidentally created mustard gas, as an attempt to avoid the spotlight, but
later on the news, Joe pointed out it was Clem who rescued the students (while at the same
time, Joe tried to get the word out about his missing parents).
Joe has another job working on an alligator farm, and after this, he eventually does find his
parents' old home in Baton Rouge, LA, but he is disappointed to find they no longer live there.
With the help of a local, Joe comes to the conclusion that his real home is in Silvertown with
Brandy, and he decides to give up the search for his parents and live with Brandy.
Unfortunately, upon his return to Silvertown, Robby informs Joe that Brandy does not want to
see Joe anymore, and Robby even shows Joe a note signed by Brandy saying that even though she
found Joe's parents, Robby should not tell Joe if he calls. Joe walks away completely
devestated, and that is the end of the story which lead to him becoming janitor at the radio
station.
After Joe is finished telling his story, Brandy calls the radio station and informs Joe his
parents are dead, and that he should go home to her. Joe's story has also touched the entire
nation, he becomes a celebrity, and he is later seen on MTV's Total Request Live. On
the show, Joe receives a call from his parents telling him they are not dead, and they tell him
where they live. However, Joe finds his parents never really cared about him at all, and they
only called him down so they could plug their business live on national television. After this
discovery, Joe threatens to commit suicide by jumping off a bridge, claiming he has nobody who
cares about him, but Brandy comes in time to convince him otherwise. Joe also gets roped by a
policeman, which causes him to fall off the bridge; the rope prevents him from hitting the
water below, but he hits his head on the underside of the bridge and is knocked unconscious.
When he comes to, he sees he has a family: Brandy (who really wants to marry Joe), Kicking Wing
(whose fireworks business had become a success thanks to Joe), Clem, and the alligator farm
owner; Clem had been relocated to Silvertown as part of the witness protection program, and he
and the alligator farm owner are also engaged.
