Just Friends stars Ryan Reynolds, Amy Smart, Anna Faris, Chris Klein, and Chris
Marquette. At the beginning of this movie, it is the year 1995, and Chris Brander (Reynolds) is
an overweight high school student in a New Jersey town. On the night of his graduation, he
attends a party of his best friend, Jamie Palamino (Smart), whom with he is also in love. He
writes a love letter in her yearbook, but it is intercepted by Jamie's ex-boyfriend, who
humiliates Chris by reading it out loud in front of everyone. Chris then leaves town and vows
to become more successful than anyone at the party. Sure enough, ten years later, Chris is a
successful record producer in Los Angeles, CA and has had more than his fair share of women
(and he has lost his excess weight as well). One day, Chris is assigned to take up-and-coming
pop sensation Samantha James (Faris) to Paris so she can sign with his record company. However,
on the way to Paris, Samantha accidentally sets the plane on fire, and they make an emergency
landing near Chris's hometown. When Chris and Samantha go into town, Chris runs into several of
his old classmates, including Jamie. Chris once again tries to take Jamie on a date, but must
overcome hurdles such as Samantha, as Chris and her went on one date that did not end up well,
and she is trying to "win him back." Chris also faces competition for Jamie from one of Jamie's
other male friends from high school, Dusty Dinkleman (Klein). Chris uses his brother, Mike
(Marquette), who often fantasizes about Samantha, to distract her while he tries to ask Jamie
out. Chris also finds more unpleasant obstacles than just Dusty and Samantha along the way to
trying to have Jamie in his life as more than just a friend.
