The Mask stars Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz. Carrey plays Stanley Ipkiss, a mild-mannered
bank clerk. One day, he falls in love with Tina Carlyle (Diaz), a beautiful singer at the new
Coco Bongo Club. Stanley tries to get into Coco Bongo, but fails because it is an exclusive
club, although he was under the impression that one of his colleagues could get him in (his
colleague is accepted into the club though). That night, he is driving a crappy loaner car from
an auto shop where his real car is undergoing repairs, and the loaner car breaks down on a
bridge over a river. He looks over the railing and believes to see a body floating on the
water, and he walks down into the river but finds it is something else. He also discovers a
strange looking mask, which he puts on for fun later, after seeing a televison special
featuring a book titled The Masks We Wear. The mask apparently contains some spirit,
as it transforms him into a whole other person, resembling a cartoon character. The mask
brings out one's most inner desires and also causes one to take risks one would not normally
take. Perhaps the biggest risk the mask makes Stanley take is to rob the bank he works at so he
can get into Coco Bongo and impress Tina. However, another thug named Dorian Tyrell (who is
also Tina's ex-boyfriend) has hired henchmen to rob the same bank that night, which causes
Dorian to hunt the mask down. Furthermore, a detective, Lt. Mitch Callaway, is also after the
mask. Stanley hilariously struggles to hold his life together while chasing after Tina and
attempting to keep his alter ego secret.
