Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny stars real life Tenacious D bandmates Jack Black
and Kyle Gass. This movie is a fictional tale of how Tenacious D gets together. It starts with
JB (Black) running away from his overly religious family in Kickapoo, MO, who is unsupportive
of his decision to pursue a career in rock and roll, to Hollywood, CA, in hopes of finding
success. From the moment JB hears KG's (Gass) music, JB is convinced KG is supposed to help him
in his journey. At first, KG refuses to let JB rock with him, but after witnessing JB get beat
up by street mimes, KG decides to take JB back to his apartment for the night. KG also claims
he is famous with a band known as "The Kyle Gass Project," and he convinces JB to clean his
apartment and do other errands with the promise that KG will let JB audition to be in his band.
Later, JB learns that KG is unemployed and living off of his parents, who send him rent checks,
at the same time when KG's mother announces she will not send him any more checks. After
finding out KG spent the last of his rent money on a new guitar for JB, JB and KG decide to
start their own rock duo, and they name themselves "Tenacious D," after the birthmarks on
their behinds. The duo struggles to write a masterpiece, but along the way, JB and KG stumble
upon an ancient secret: the greatest rock bands of the world all use the same guitar pick. This
"Pick of Destiny" is actually known to be Satan's tooth, and as such, it possesses
"supranatural" abilities with stringed instruments ("supranatural" being a "whole level above
supernatural"). The duo makes it its mission to steal the pick from the Rock and Roll History
Museum, where it is currently being kept, but along the way, KG and JB briefly split up due to
KG becoming distracted by an invitation to play at a sorority party. KG does play at the party,
but quickly finds out he is no good. JB has his own adventures, while he is high on mushrooms.
The two do get back together and retrieve the pick, but they accidentally break it. The pick is
immediately intercepted by Satan himself, who had been posing undercover as an open mic night
host at the club where Tenacious D is scheduled to play. Satan then takes the image of his true
self and threatens to take everyone to Hell, starting with Tenacious D, unless the band can
defeat him in a rockoff challenge!
