The Waterboy stars Adam Sandler, Jerry Reed, Henry Winkler, and Kathy Bates. Near the
beginning of this movie, a thirty-one year old socially inept, stuttering water boy named Bobby
Boucher (Sandler) gets fired from his position at the fictitous University of Louisiana by
Coach Red Beaulieu (Reed) because he had distracted Red's football team too many times. Red's
players had been tormenting him for all eighteen years he had served as their water boy. Later,
Bobby approaches Coach Klein (Winkler) of the fictitious South Central Louisiana State
University and becomes Klein's football team's water boy free of charge (the college cannot
afford to pay him, but Bobby can't stand the sight of the filthy water Klein had been serving
his team). Klein's players torment Bobby as well, but Klein encourages Bobby to stand up for
himself. This leads to Bobby becoming a tackling machine as his way of letting out years of
pent-up aggression. Klein immediately recommends Bobby play football for South Central and
gets him enrolled in college. Bobby's overprotective mother, Helen (Bates), objects to his
playing football and going to college, as she considers those things "the devil," but Bobby
plays football and attends college behind her back. Bobby uses flashbacks of various people
giving him crap in life as his "tackling fuel," and he ends up carrying South Central to the
Bourbon Bowl against his old school, the University of Louisiana. Red, of course, is angered by
Bobby's success, and he is also at odds with Klein, and he tries to put a stop to their
successes by proving Bobby's high school transcript is fake (Bobby was home schooled), which
ends up putting Bobby out of college and makes South Central's football team suck again (the
team was a joke before Bobby showed up). However, Bobby attempts (and succeeds) at getting back
into college by passing a GED exam, but complicates things by letting his mother find out that
he had been playing football all along, and his mother tries to put a stop to Bobby's success
as well.
